Tip. Plant eens bloembollen in potten!

Afgelopen week is mijn bloembollenbestelling aangekomen. Op het moment is het veel te droog in mijn tuin om bloembollen te planten. Ik wacht op regen; daarna kan ik de zware klei grond weer in. Als je al bloembollen in de grond hebt geplant, geef ze dan WATER zodat de bloembollen wortels kunnen maken.

Wanneer ik mijn bloembollenleverancier bericht dat de bloembollen zijn aangekomen spreekt hij zijn bezorgdheid uit over het veranderende klimaat. Dit voorjaar viel de oogst tegen door vorst en droogte en nu is het planten weer een probleem omdat het te droog en warm is. Hij heeft een punt. Ik ben afgelopen week naar nog naar het strand geweest! Bizar.

Toch is er iets dat ik wel kan doen, namelijk het planten van bloembollen in potten. Een eenvoudig klusje.

Tip.

Ik plant de bloembollen niet direct in de terracottapot, mand of teil, maar in een plastic container die er precies in past. Dat geeft me de mogelijkheid om te switchen. Zodra de ene soort is uitgebloeid zet ik er een andere container met  bloeiende  bloembollen voor in de plaats. Tip: de grote bollen van tulpen en narcissen doen het beter in een grote pot dan in een klein potje. Denk dus niet te klein!

Zo ga je te werk:

Doe wat potgrond in de plastic pot en plant er een laag bollen in. Bedek de bloembollen met een laagje potgrond en plant er nogmaals bollen op. Afdekken met potgrond. Vergeet niet de container te labelen. Echt, na 6 maanden ben je vergeten wat je hebt geplant. Geef de bloembollen water! Het planten van bloembollen in potten is vlug klaar. Sneller dan dat ik dit blog kan typen!

Tot wanneer kan je nog bloembollen planten?

Bloembollen zonder vel, zoals sneeuwklokjes, kievitseitjes, keizerskroon enz. moeten zo snel mogelijk geplant. Tulpen kun je tot half januari in potten planten (als de grond niet bevroren is)

Dus geen stress, ik heb nog alle tijd!

Tip. Plant flower bulbs in pots!

Last week the flower bulbs I ordered have arrived. Alas, at the moment it is much too dry in my garden to plant the bulbs. I will have to wait for rain in order to start working into the heavy clay soil.

As I tell my flower bulb supplier (Jan Deen) the bulbs have arrived safely, he expresses his concern about the changing climate. This spring the crop was disappointing because of frost and drought and now planting is a problem because it is too dry and warm. He has a point there. I went to the beach last week! Bizarre.

Yet there is something that I can do; planting the flower bulbs in pots. It is a very simple job.

Tip.

I do not plant the bulbs directly into the basket or terracotta pot but in a plastic container that fits exactly into the basket or terracotta pot. That gives me the opportunity to switch. Once one species has finished flowering, I put another container with bulbs in its place. Mind you: The larger bulbs of tulips and daffodils do better in a larger container pot. So think big!

How to proceed?

Put some soil in the plastic pot and plant a layer of bulbs. Cover the bulbs with a layer of potting soil and plant/place another layer of bulbs on top of that. Cover the bulbs with soil. Do not forget to label the container. Believe me, after 6 months you will not remember what you've planted. Planting bulbs in pots is quickly done. Faster than I can type this blog!

Can I still plant bulbs?

Plant bulbs with a naked skin like snowdrops, Frittelaria and Imperial crowns as soon as possible You can plant tulips in pots until mid-January (provided the soil is not frozen).

So no stress. I have got plenty of time!
